Somaya’s Latest Release "Stand Up" is an Anthem for Sexual Assault Survivors

A Way to Support Survivors as they Tell Their Stories

Los Angeles, CA - November 30, 2017 -- Singer/Songwriter Somaya doesn’t shy away from issues with her music. Instead, she approaches them head-on with fierce lyrics and her raw vocals. Topics like love, alcoholism, the LGTBQ+ community, inclusivity, and diversity are all addressed with the fearlessness and directness that Somaya embodies with her music.  Somaya's current album, "Stand Up", was recently released earlier this year, but it feels very timely as many of the issues she champions are trending topics in current events. The lead single, and title track, "Stand Up", is especially well timed because of the recent numbers of women that have spoken up about past instances of sexual assault and harassment they’ve suffered at the hands of famous men.

"Stand Up" outlines a narrative that many sexual assault survivors live every day, of how abuse and harassment are normalized by society, and even when women report incidents they face not being believed by authorities. The chorus offers a small bit of activism, encouraging everyone to stand up against sexual assault. Lyrics like, "boys will be boys you say" shed light on how sexual harassment and assault is not taken seriously. Somaya’s lyric   "How can a girl feel safe" is how many women feel daily.

"Stand Up" has been met with high praise. "We were blown away by this," iHeartRadio station 96.1 said in support of Somaya’s groundbreaking album.

Somaya is always hard at work writing and recording new material. She continues to write songs that heal and put a spotlight on issues she cares about. A new project is in the works, and she hopes to announce a release date in 2018.
