“Pretend” is about loving someone and the pain that the world can’t know. Fitch wrote the song through his personal experience of that pain and his decision to stop pretending. The story follows the decline of his relationship with an old love interest as the couple began glossing over their issues and pretending to be friends.
The music video cinematically shows the opposition between dark and light, right and wrong, good and bad, in a relationship. Fitch hopes that by watching the music video, viewers will know that “you don’t have to be unhappy! There’s so much out there in the world that you can experience and you can live with lots of love.”
