After years spent behind the scenes, Ker steps forward with a debut built on patience, perspective, and a genuine love of melody.
After years of working in marketing, Scottish songwriter and producer Barry G.K. Thomson — who records under the name Ker — is preparing to release his first album, Converging Paths, sometime early next year. The project introduces an artist who has taken his time to find his voice and now sounds ready to share it.
Ker didn’t come up through the usual route. Music was always there in the background, starting with the first time he heard Elvis Presley’s Don’t Be Cruel on an old 78rpm record. Like many of his generation, he was shaped by The Beatles, Hendrix, Neil Young, and Dylan — and today, his music echoes the British prog-rock sounds of Yes and Pink Floyd. But for most of his adult life, his career led elsewhere — into the corporate world, not the studio.
That changed unexpectedly in 2014 during a trip to Kalispell, Montana. He walked into a local music store, picked up a guitar, and found himself drawn into a small but welcoming community of musicians. They showed him the basics, helped him find confidence in singing and writing, and reminded him how music brings people together.
When he returned home to Scotland, he set up a small studio in his garden and began writing. The songs that followed weren’t about chasing trends or proving something — they were about observation, memory, and the small details that make people connect. Over time, this turned into Converging Paths, an twelve-track album that captures where his creative journey has led him.
Ker’s music sits somewhere between folk, soft rock, and adult contemporary — melodic, understated, and honest. His upcoming single Wondering on Giants shows that clearly. Built around layered guitars and steady rhythms, it evokes the Scottish countryside while quietly reflecting on the human drive to climb, explore, and endure. It’s simple but confident, the kind of song that feels familiar after one listen.
The other preview from the album, There Are No Words, moves in a different direction — smaller in scale, more personal. It’s a love song that never uses the word “love,” carried by a gentle acoustic arrangement and a melody that lingers. The track says more through its restraint than it would through any big chorus or grand statement, and that subtlety feels true to Ker’s approach overall.
Other songs, like Lofty Thoughts, look at the things people hold onto — objects, letters, reminders of the past that are hard to let go of even when they serve no real purpose. It’s not nostalgic in a sentimental way, but it’s more about understanding why people keep certain memories close. Across the album, there’s a consistent tone of reflection without melancholy, and melody without excess.
The sound of Converging Paths is shaped by the music Ker grew up with. There’s a balance between acoustic and electric elements, and a focus on the lyrics without sacrificing the tune. It’s carefully put together, but never overproduced. The goal is simply to make something worth listening to — songs that might stay with people for their own reasons.
This isn’t a debut driven by youth or industry momentum. It’s a record built on patience — made because the timing finally felt right. These songs reflect experience, not hurry, and they carry the calm of someone creating for the right reasons.
Ker has said that he hopes listeners feel uplifted and nourished after hearing his songs. That’s a modest wish, but it suits the album. There’s nothing loud or dramatic here — just genuine effort, care, and a belief that music still matters.
The release of Wondering on Giants on December 1st will introduce Ker’s work to listeners ahead of the full album. It’s a fitting first step - steady, grounded, and thoughtful. And when Converging Paths arrive in 2026, it will offer a broader picture of who he is as an artist — someone quietly making music for people who still listen closely.
For now, there’s anticipation more than hype. The tracks speak for themselves, and that’s exactly how he seems to want it.
